PlayStation with a Cyber-companion?

With the PS5 being the most anticipated gaming console of late, it isn't hard to understand why. Putting aside the futuristic perk of the partner DualSense controller, the console provides more and more reasons to make gamers feel the future now. With information coming from all over the globe, gamers eagerly wait to see what new experiences the PlayStation 5 brings.

With new information coming through the US Patent and Trademark Office, we are made to know Sony Interactive Entertainment is looking at building a "human-type, pet-type robot" with a "feeling deduction unit". The initial sketch design by Sony represents the robot looking like an expressionless cloud with eyes and limbs. The statement in the patent goes as follows:

"A user places a robot nearby and views contents together, while the robot communicates with the user by outputting a reaction to empathise with the user or outputting a reaction against the user conversely, on the basis of a deduced user's feeling. Essentially, it watches you game, or watches you watch movies or TV, and expresses fear, sadness or happiness by deducing your feelings and mimicking them. It then begins "determining an action of the object on a basis of the internal state of the object; and causing the object to perform the determined action".

This humanoid robot is said to perform some other functions, including acting as a "virtual object" that enables the gamer physically interact during Virtual Reality experiences on the PlayStation 5. Hypothetically, it isn't a bad idea to assume the cloud-like body of the robot would enable some sort of morphing or sensation communication, notwithstanding the already set basic expression mimicry function.

Emphasizing on this being a patent, it is not certain if this humanoid companion would go into production. However, with the world of technology developing fast, it isn't unrealistic to see this in the nearest future. It doesn't seem to be so far off, an age when the gamer would have a frightening, yet intriguing cyber-companion.
